gidday all, some great reading here.
Since the
family is now here, to get the get the other half to come with me i have to upgrade from the swag to a
tent. (she needs a bit more comfort allround)
Dont want something cheap and nasty that will fail me when needed.
Any advice appreciated

When travelling North, buy a bigger
tent than what you think you'll need. Living in a 2 man
tent for a week in
Weipa isn't a great experience :)

My
family of 4 ( kids are currently 4 and 6 ) get by very nicely in a Freedom
family tourer
tent.
Plenty of room and tough canvas construction. Only draw back is pretty heavy.
They are expensive but then all the good Aussie made canvas touring tents are.
With tents as with most things you get what you pay for.
Cheers

I got a Coleman Classic 4. This is a good compromise for me for travelling or a longer stay. It has a good awning and good standing height throughout and both of these are essential to keeping the body in good shape.
I use a big tarp to cover
tent and go out further for a kitchen.
However, coming from left field, if you are going to be doing a lot of camping with a growing
family I'd buy a cheaper camper trailer or better still for many women a Jayco or similar poptop van suited to some off track. The latter suggestion gives her a lounge and when you are handling smaller children that is very
well received.
A camper trailer is not much dearer than tents.

The Classic 4 looks good for the very occasional times we don't take the camper. From the photos on the Coleman site it looks like it has 4 or 5 pegs per side - do they all need to be in before it will stand up? Same for the guy ropes?

Just been through this exercise... Ended up going a CT. Reason primarily was ease of use with a
family of 5, speedy getaway and a mechanism to cart all the many cubic meters of stuff that is needed. Cost was an issue but long term balanced out for lifestyle. But in terms of a
tent, as others have said, do you want space, speed, bulk, your budget, are you touring or staying in one place for a long time, or all of the above. Interms of canvas, I liked the Freedom
family tourer, or for real versatility, a couple of OzTents and side panels etc. In dome, umm, there wasn't a dome I really wanted. Have a look at post 27812 where I asked some similar questions and got good info.

Hi Tony,
Did you buy the CT? What did you get? When are you giving it a
test run?

Hi Carpo
Check out the OZ Tents (www.oztent.com.au) you could zip 2 together and have them both up faster than you can a small dome.
They are around 13kg each (26kg for the two) you can enclose the awnings . There are also mesh rooms you can add on as dining rooms.
I priced it up the other week two RV4s with all anex walls $3000.00
These are canvas and are the esaest
tent I have seen to errect.

If you want quality
Southern Cross Tents are it. You will sell it in 10 yrs for more than you pay, they dont depreciate.
If you want cheaper try aussie disposals, rays etc all have canvas tents, not sure on their quality and brands, so have a look.
